Do not go gentle into that good night By Dylan Thomas.
I found Thomas to be a wonderful writer. The poem is simple yet effective, the words and how they are said is what makes this poem great. I find that many other writes make an effort to be obscure and edgy , Thomas is to the point and I like that about his writing style.
The poem seems to be about hos father or perhaps just about men whos time has come. Its a strong message “Do not go gentle into that good night” It is repeated thought the poem and becomes stronger with every reference. In layman terms it means don't let death come to you without a fight.
I have hear the line many times and it holds a strong connection with my own mentality, live your life to the fullest be yourself no matter what. Power through the rough times and always do everything in your power to stay alive. Leave a strong memory behind for those who stand at your funeral. Be a martyr and a hero if you are faced with the inevitable death we all look forward to.
He describes Old men, good men, wild men, grave men, and his father. Followed by the quote do not go gently into that good night. By describing all these different men Thomas states that no matter what kind of man you are, or deeds great or small, all men from every path of life should pass with rage against death and the goodnight. Everyman should not be ashamed to fight every last moment to make it one more day, one more breath, one more second of life. Because worth every last ounce that you fight for.
This poem stays strong and is timeless, men will always be Wild or Grave, and as a person you should give every moment before death raging against old age. To take another perspective this poem could also state that old age should not be an excuse to stop striving and bettering yourself. Don't let the age define what you are or what you can do blaze the trail even as your body is weakening and letting go.
“And you, my father, there on the sad height,
Curse, bless, me now with your fierce tears, I pray.
Do not go gentle into that good night.
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.”
This last line shows the reason for the poem, Dylan's father must have shown him the fierce and intense will to carry on even on his deathbed. His father's last lesson was one one the most important ones, because a person only looses to death once and one does not go gentle into that goodnight.
